Publishing 3.0: Industry Briefing on the Participation in the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2024
- 2024-05-18
In April, our “Publishing 3.0” team traveled to Italy to participate in the 2024 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. We proudly showcased our e-books and audiobooks in the “Hong Kong Smart eBook Hub”, along with our AI-powered e-book conversion tool. Our aim was to facilitate copyright trading and licensing. Subsequently, we organized an industry sharing session on 18 May to share our team’s experience at the Hong Kong Pavilion of the Bologna Book Fair. This included our business networking meetings with potential partners and the latest updates on the “Hong Kong Smart eBook Hub”. We were honoured to have Dr. Elaine Choy, the award-winning author of “The Next Writer Publication Funding Scheme”, and Dr. Sharon Wong, Executive Chairperson (Administration) of the “Publishing 3.0” Steering Committee and Executive Director of the Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society, in attendance. They shared their experiences from the Book Fair with the attendees. Dr. Wong also provided the latest updates on the eBook Hub. Their presentations were well received by the audience.

To help Hong Kong's e-books and audiobooks explore the international market, and to promote the copyright trade of Hong Kong's e-books, the "Publishing 3.0 - Hong Kong Smart eBook Hub" ("Publishing 3.0") project team went to Bologna, Italy to participate in this year's Bologna Children's Book Fair from April 8 to 11, and exhibited the "Hong Kong Smart eBook Hub" at the "Hong Kong Pavilion - Soaring Creativity" set up within the book fair. During the book fair, the "Hong Kong Pavilion - Soaring Creativity" held a record-breaking 13 cultural activities, creating a new high. Through the "AI-empowered e-book conversion platform" driven by artificial intelligence, the "Publishing 3.0" project helps Hong Kong publishers self-translate and produce high-quality Chinese and English electronic publications, and selects works with potential for the international market to build the "Hong Kong Smart eBook Hub". To promote Hong Kong's development as a regional copyright centre for e-books and audiobooks, the project conducts promotions both locally and abroad, bringing Hong Kong's creative achievements to the industry worldwide, in order to assist the Hong Kong publishing industry in developing e-book copyright trade. Dr. Sharon Wong, Executive Chairwoman (Administration) of “Publishing 3.0” Steering Committee and Executive Director of Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society, introduced "Publishing 3.0" during the Bologna Children's Book Fair this year, showcasing the results of Hong Kong's e-book publishing conversion technology. Currently, 63 Hong Kong publishing organizations are participating in "Publishing 3.0", and have successfully converted over 5,000 Chinese and English e-books and audiobooks through the project's " AI-empowered e-book conversion platform". During the book fair, Dr. Sharon Wong also shared the development of the "Publishing 3.0" project over the past year, and demonstrated the key features of the platform, such as trial reading and listening functions, in the smart e-book hub.

What New Features Found in e-Books
E-books have evolved significantly over the years, with new features and capabilities being added to enhance the reading experience. Here are some of the latest features of e-books: Enhanced multimedia content: E-books can now include multimedia elements such as audio, video, and interactive graphics. This can make the reading experience more engaging and immersive, particularly for children's books or educational texts. Customizable font and layout settings: Many e-readers and e-book apps now allow readers to adjust the font size, style, and spacing, as well as the background color and brightness. This can make reading more comfortable for those with visual impairments or other reading difficulties. Social reading features: Some e-books now include social reading features that allow readers to share comments and annotations with others, either in real-time or after finishing the book. This can create a sense of community around the book and enhance the reading experience. Cloud syncing and storage: E-books can now be stored on cloud servers, which allows readers to access their books from multiple devices and sync their reading progress across devices. This makes it easier to pick up where they left off and to switch between reading on different devices. Augmented reality (AR) features: Some e-books now include AR features that allow readers to interact with the book's content in a more immersive way. For example, a children's book might include AR elements that pop up on the screen when the reader points their device at the page. Voice-enabled reading: Some e-books now include text-to-speech features that allow the book to be read aloud by a virtual assistant, such as Siri or Alexa. This can be helpful for those who have difficulty reading or who prefer to listen to books instead.
