Liu Xiangcheng's photography captured two pioneering historical events - China's rise after economic reform and the disintegration of the Soviet Union during Mikhail Gorbachev's leadership. For these achievements, he was named Photographer of the Year by the Associated Press between 1989 and 1991. In 1989, he was awarded the "Best Picture of the Year in the United States" by the University of Missouri. In 1992, his outstanding coverage of the Soviet Union's disintegration earned him and his colleagues in Moscow the "Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography." He also won the "Kodak Award of the Overseas Press Club of America" that year. Liu Xiangcheng's photographs of China have been widely recognized for capturing a changing era with a unique combination of local sentiment and independent perspective.
