The book focuses on cultural interaction and social change to explain the development of ancient Hong Kong. The author first briefly recounts Hong Kong’s thousands years of history in six periods: ancient times; Qin and Han; Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties; Sui and Tang; and Song and Yuan. Then, he goes on to discuss different historical topics, such as the administrative history of Hong Kong, livelihood and socio-economics, and religion and education before modern times, portraying the Hong Kong society in different contexts. The author points out that Chinese culture and tradition with thousands of years of history are the root and foundation of Hong Kong's growth.
