The Path of the Sages: The History of Catholic Mission in Sai Kung
Celebrating the 180th anniversary of the Catholic Mission in Hong Kong, this book delves into the development of the Catholic Church in Sai Kung since the establishment of the diocese in 1841 from a historical anthropological perspective. It explores the church's integration into rural society, its connection with Chinese traditional culture, and its role as a messenger of East-West cultural exchange. Divided into seven stages, the book covers the church's early mission, the vicariate period, martyrdom, clergy hardships during the Japanese occupation, and post-war reconstruction. The Ancient Path Working Group meticulously reviewed over a hundred years of diocesan and government documents, and visited more than twenty villages to trace the routes of past missionaries, supplementing the book with over a hundred precious photos and timelines of major events in each chapel. This vividly presents a lesser-known segment of Hong Kong's history to readers.
