James Wong Jim was a renowned composer and lyricist in Hong Kong, with over a thousand works to his name. Classics such as ""The Bund"", ""Under Lion Rock"", and ""A Laugh in the Sea"" are among his most famous. His lyrics cover a wide range of topics, including love, martial arts, and patriotism, and are known for their intense emotions and frank expressiveness. He used a mix of classical Chinese, vernacular Chinese, and dialects in his ""three imperial examinations"" style, which is distinctive. Having worked in the advertising industry for many years, Wong understood the importance of language and wrote many memorable and catchy lyrics, making a significant contribution to the promotion of Cantonese music culture. There are many books on the market that critique Wong's lyrics, but most of them focus on the lyrics themselves. The author of this book, also a lyricist, believes that lyrics are inseparable from people. Therefore, when writing this book, he referred to a large number of Wong's lectures, interviews, and materials, and selected about sixty of Wong's works to discuss their backgrounds, techniques, and hidden thoughts, looking at Wong from a human perspective in the world of lyrics. The author's analysis cleverly blends with Wong's words, combining academic rigor with interest. Through precise and vivid language, the book takes readers back to the golden age of Cantonese pop music.
