Not Bound by the World - An Autobiography of Mark Kai-keung
"Not bound by the world", that is, not bound by secular affairs, is the teaching that Kang Youwei, a pioneer of the late Qing Dynasty's reform, left to his daughter. After generations of passing down, it has now been passed down to the great-grandson generation. Professor Mark Kai-kong, known as the "father of biology", has used the teaching as Mark’s family motto. Professor Mark, who is now 82 years old, returned to the Chinese University of Hong Kong to teach after obtaining a doctoral degree in the United States in 1965. He holds three US patents for using bacteria to decompose dyes and is a pioneer in environmental protection and biology in the 1980s. Professor Mark has been teaching for 30 years. On weekdays, he walks around the CUHK campus with a nicely-groomed handlebar moustache, wearing a hunting outfit and holding a whip. He has created a "Doctoral Study Formula" and successfully sent more than 130 students to study abroad for doctoral degrees, including Professor Xu Li of the University of Hong Kong. In addition, Professor Mark is also an antique collector. He has collected tens of thousands of ancient coins, bronze mirrors, jade, ceramics, calligraphy and painting, and has donated his collection to museums in China, Hong Kong and Macau in recent years. Professor Mark is also good at stock chart analysis and has predicted three major market crashes. It is rumored that he has made a lot of profits from that. This book describes Professor Mark's childhood, youth, study, teaching, stock trading, and antique collection years, with insights and bits and pieces. From Professor Mark's success story, we must be able to gain many insights.
