An Oral History of Psychiatry in Post-war Hong Kong
From High Street to Castle Peak Mental Hospital, this book tells the story of the development of psychiatric medicine in Hong Kong over the past 70 years. The editors are a group of like-minded psychiatrists who have taken on the responsibility of filling the gaps in the history of psychiatric medicine. They hope to provide an insider's perspective on the history of psychiatry, including the daily life in psychiatric hospitals. The editorial team visited the first generation of psychiatrists and many other key figures in the development of psychiatry, including pioneering professors of psychiatry in Hong Kong, the first psychiatric nurse to receive training abroad, pioneers in occupational therapy, psychologists, social workers, and founders of non-profit organizations. The book also includes memoirs by former Castle Peak Hospital director Chan Ting-yang and a speech by the first locally registered psychiatric nurse, Mr. Ng Kwong-wah. The experiences of these pioneers not only show the transformation of the old asylums into modern psychiatric hospitals, but also reveal a true picture of psychiatric hospitals to readers.
